Nobody knows exactly what the symbols mean, but anthropologists have some guesses. There were other symbols of suns, medicine, plants, spirits, and some indicating whether there was water nearby. There were people, people dancing, people with horns, and handprints. There were deer, lizards, sheep, and snakes. There is an even greater variety of symbols than at Atlatl Rock. Be sure to look at the blackened sandstone walls along the hike, because they are completely covered with petroglyphs. The trail goes along a wash that was very muddy when we hiked it. Mouse’s Tank Trail was our favorite place to hike in the park. Aside from it being so hot, it eventually turned out to be a good run. We finished the run by approaching the loop and accessing the slot canyon from the other direction and running on the road a bit as well. We probably would have gone through the water if we weren’t trying to do the hike as a run. The slot canyon would have been really neat as well because it was so narrow. The colorful White Domes were very beautiful though, and the shapes they formed were incredible. The trail began in deep sand, the next part was a scramble that was pretty much impossible to run, and the slot canyon along the trail was completely filled with foot deep water. We wanted to do a trail run in the park, and we decided to try and run White Domes Trail. Beyond Parking Area 3 is the where the road ends at the White Domes area. First, we did the 1.2-mile out-and-back hike (click here - Fire Wave Hike), and then we made up a loop where we stopped by on the return - (Pastel Canyon/Fire Wave Loop). Seeing puddles in the desert is a bizarre and unique experience. The Fire Wave rocks are an iconic photo op at Valley of Fire, and we visited twice.

At the same time, it felt like everything in the park had been cleaned and the plants were brighter and greener. There was a great deal of debris and gravel over some of the roads in the park though, and the rain affected some of the trails as well. But once the rain and hail hit the metal roof, it was so loud and forceful that even Ian couldn’t sleep through it.įortunately we were in very high area without any risk of flash flooding. Somehow Ian managed to sleep through all that.

I woke up to thunder rumbles, and I watched dry purple lighting crack across the sky for about an hour before the rain hit us. a never ending process of building a fiery desert landscape.The night before we arrived in the park, we experienced a massive desert storm.

Today, wind and rain are turning these large rock formations back into sand. The slower the water moved, the more calcite was deposited, creating hard spots in the stone.

The mile and a quarter mile trail loop leads up between the White Domes over a thick deposit of soft sand, then down to a narrow slot canyon of the Kaolin Wash and remnants of a 1966 movie set from The Professionals.Īncient underground streams percolated through thick layers of sand, cementing particles together with calcite. The White Domes Trailhead is found in the extreme northern section of the park, but still attracts plenty of attention. This view of White Domes appears almost out of place among all the surrounding red rock formations. This part of the Mojave Desert, just north of Lake Mead National Recreation Area, holds a treasure trove of ancient rock art, natural sandstone arches, and acres of vivid red rock scenery. Dedicated in 1935, the Valley of Fire gets its name from the brilliant red rock that dominates the landscape. About an hour north of Las Vegas lies Nevada’s oldest and largest state park.
